Technical overview

Schools in New Zealand are increasingly relying on cloud or web based services. These services all require separate usernames and passwords which creates issues for users and managers. The IAM project tackles these issues. The project has enabled the development of two solutions: The UDI tool and IDP.

IDP (Identity Provider)

The IDP is a web based portal that allows you staff and students to single sign on (login in once) to all your web / cloud based services.

UDI (User Directory Interface)

This is a tool which allows your SMS to feed user information through to your schools user directory. This currently works with KAMAR, PC Schools, eTap, MUSAC and Assembly.

Below are some screen shot of a schools portal page and the IDP login page (for the Wellington IDP). Click to enlarge.

The technology that has been implemented uses SAML. Watch the video below for an overview of SAML. There are
some videos from a IAM presentation on the videos page. The videos are a comprehensive overview of the tools developed, the background of the project, the advantages, the software in action and the technical set up.

At the foot of the page is a presentation by the lead developer on this project (Piers Harding from Catalyst). You need to download the zip, unpack and open index.html.
